Launch of Canada’s First Indoor “Nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one,” shouts the grade two class from Orillia’s Regent Park Public School, as the first-ever indoor portable Children’s Safety Village was unveiled on April 22nd. This unique teaching tool relies on interactive displays to educate students on potential dangers in the home, in the community and online. The village, which can be set up in school gyms, consists of a 12- by 15-metre mat with visual representations of streets, sidewalks, park areas, and ponds. Child-sized signs, buildings, cars and trains are set up in the village to create an interactive learning environment. Students travel through the village learning lessons from trained safety professionals.
The elements of the portable village are uniquely designed to fit a 26-foot trailer that will travel from school to school, expand on site, turning the school gym into a safety village. This is a powerful interactive learning tool that eliminates the need for students to travel.
“Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I will understand,” is the slogan for the safety village. Regent Park Public School student, seven-year-old Jessica Downard, was sworn in as a junior constable with the OPP. She led all the other students through the safety village on her battery-powered police cruiser.
The launch gained much recognition, with many notable figures within the community and surrounding areas in attendance. OPP Orillia Detachment, local and surrounding area Fire Departments, and local mayors, just to name a few. |
